The idea to develop the community sports centre, followed two feasibility studies conducted by the Sandys Secondary Middle School Trustees, and an examination of the Student Youth Survey 2004 conducted by the National Drug Commission. In response to the concerns raised regarding youth and community development, the trustees established the Sandys 360 Foundation. The Foundation being chaired by Mr. Walter Roberts, has been charged with the responsibility to construct the Centre. Mr. Roberts indicated that the facility is being designed with the following purposes in view:
Dr. Melvyn Bassett, Managing Director, suggests that the Sandys 360 facility will provide a more efficient model for coordination of resources that are made available to the west end community – government and private. He believes that the utilization of school facilities after school hours, and during holiday times, will possibly become a proto-type for other communities throughout Bermuda.
In addition to the dedication of the property for youth and community development, by the Sandys Trustees, this unique project and fundraising model has received support and funding from efforts undertaken by current and past pupils, parents, teachers of Sandys and neighboring schools, friends of Sandys, corporate, government, and in-kind support from a variety of sources.
The Board of Trustees and the Sandys 360 Foundation would like to thank those who have contributed to our capital campaign, and invites friends, businesses, and residents of Sandys to join us in our efforts to make a difference in the lives of our young people, and to help enhance the quality of life for all, in the west-end community.
For more information, or for those wishing to join us by making a donation or offer support – volunteer etc., may contact the Sandys 360 Foundation office.
